Lower Bounds on Systolic Gossip

چکیده
Gossiping is an information dissemination process in which each processor has a distinct item of information and has to collect all the items possessed by the other processors. In this paper we derive lower bounds on the gossiping time of systolic protocols, i.e. constituted by a periodic repetition of simple communication steps. In particular, if we denote by n the number of processors in the network, then for directed networks and for undirected networks in the half-duplex mode any s-systolic gossip protocol takes at least g(s) log2 n time steps, where g(4) = 1:8133, g(6) = 1:5310 and g(8) = 1:4721. For the case s = 4 this result is improved to 2:0218 log2 n for directed butterflies of degree 2 and we show that the 2:0218 log2 n and 1:8133 log2 n lower bounds hold also respectively for undirected Butterfly and de Bruijn networks of degree 2 in the full-duplex case. Our results are obtained by means of new technique relying on two novel concepts in the field: the notion of delay digraph of a systolic protocol and the use of matrix norm methods.

Note on Optimal Gossiping in Some Weak-Connected Graphs
The problems of gossiping and broadcasting in one-way communication mode are investigated. Optimal algorithms for gossip problem are known only for the complete graphs, paths, some simple trees, and cycles. In this paper some lower bounds on gossiping in graphs with bridges or with edge disjoint cycles are proved. A direct consequence of these lower bounds are optimal gossip algorithms for some...
متن کاملImproved Bounds for Minimum Fault-Tolerant Gossip Graphs
A k-fault-tolerant gossip graph is a (multiple) graph whose edges are linearly ordered such that for any ordered pair of vertices u and v, there are k + 1 edge-disjoint ascending paths from u to v. Let τ(n, k) denote the minimum number of edges in a k-fault-tolerant gossip graph with n vertices. In this paper, we present upper and lower bounds on τ(n, k) which improve the previously known bound...

A concept of systolic dissemination of information in interconnection networks is presented, and the complexity of systolic gossip and broadcast in one-way (telegraph) and two-way (telephone) communication mode is investigated. The following main results are established: (i) a general relation between systolic broadcast and systolic gossip, (ii) optimal systolic gossip algorithms on paths in bo...
متن کاملGossip and Random Walk Techniques for Network Coding
Ad hoc and sensor networks usually do not have a central entity for managing information spreading. Moreover, such wireless stations have limited energy and computational power. All this leads to a need for distributed and efficient algorithms for disseminating information across the network. Network coding in conjunction with random walks and gossip techniques proposes a local and distributed ...
متن کاملOptimal Algorithms for Broadcast and Gossip in the Edge-Disjoint Path Modes (Extended Abstract)
The communication power of the one-way and two-way edge-disjoint path modes for broadcast and gossip is investigated. The complexity of communication algorithms is measured by the number of communication steps (rounds). The main results achieved are the following: 1. For each connected graph G n of n nodes, the complexity of broadcast in G n , B min (G n), satisses dlog 2 ne B min (G n) dlog 2 ...
